You are full of so many emotions—mainly excitement—about spending the rest of your life
with your best friend! Which means you’ve run to the nearest Barnes & Noble, bought all the wedding
magazines and now you’re sitting on your bed, champagne in hand, paging through magazines…with no idea what to do next. This is where your Bridal Plan is super important!
Let’s start with some step-by-steps as you head into this new and uncharted world of being a fiancé.
First off, make sure you’ve shared your big news with all the important people in your life. This can be parents, grandparents, close family members, and of course, your dearest friends. It is important to do this over the phone or in person because you don’t want your mom to see an updated Facebook status before she gets a phone call! If you need advice on how to announce your engagement on social media, click here.
It’s also really important to make sure your new bling is sized properly. Make sure to take it to the jeweler STAT to ensure it fits your finger perfectly. You don’t want to lose it if it falls off your finger because it’s too big. That could cost thousands of dollars. Which brings me to my next important point—ring insurance.
While this isn’t exactly romantic or fun, nothing puts a damper on engagement bliss like losing or damaging your ring so it’s always a good idea to get your ring insured. You can usually add ring insurance as an extension to your homeowners or renters insurance policy and it’s surprisingly inexpensive. Be sure to call your insurance agent, they will be better prepared to walk you through the process of insuring your ring for theft, damage, and loss.
Now that you have the important stuff checked off your list, remember to take a few deep breaths and ENJOY the moment! Take a few weeks (or even a month or two) to let the news sink in and savor this time together—enjoy being in love and dreaming about your future together while showing off your bling whenever possible! This is such an exciting time in your lives. Celebrate the two of you in this new stage of your relationship without rushing into planning the wedding right away.
And then, when you feel you’re ready, start thinking about a wedding date. Typically, the most desirable wedding dates get booked far in advance—from one to two years—so if you are wanting to get married within a year or two, start considering dates and discuss what’ll work best for both of you.
That’s all for now, but stay tuned for the next installment of Dear Bride, which will have more step-by-steps as you move closer to the actual planning of your wedding!
